Smart Goals
2025-10-09
Get better at English grammar
| Specific | I want to get better at English grammar, especially tenses. I will read about them and do exercises. |
|---|---|
| Measurable | I will take a test once a month, and my score will be my measurement. |
| Achievable | I will use AI to generate learning materials and tests. I will also use online resources. |
| Relevant | The ability to use tenses correctly and effectively will improve my spoken and written English. |
| Time-bound | I want to achieve this goal by the end of semester so January 2026. |
Class work - AI Policy
2025-10-13
We had to create an AI usage policy. In our view, the use of AI tools
should not be completely prohibited, but any use of such tools should be
clearly acknowledged. Using AI during exams should be forbidden, as exams
are meant to test individual knowledge and skills.
We believe that banning AI entirely does not make sense, because people would
still use it despite the restrictions. Instead of strict bans, clear rules and
transparency are more effective. AI should be treated as a tool that supports
people in their work and learning, not as a replacement for human thinking or
responsibility.
In our case, we used AI only for grammar checking and language improvements.

Class Work - Self Presentation
2025-10-23
We had to prepare a self presentation about ourselves. Teacher privided us with a autopresentation template. I filled it with my own informations and I practiced pronunciation using natural reader tool. I had problems with pronunciation of some words, especially "Bachelor's". Below is a link to my presentation template.

Reminder of present tenses - part 1
That time, I focused on reviewing the present tenses (present simple, present continuous). To remind myself the structure and usage of these tenses I used following online resources:
After reading each resource, I made a short notes for each tense to help me remember the usage.
Present Simple
Usage:
- Routine actions and habbits (always, usually, often, sometimes, never etc.)
- Describe states of people and things (He is happy)
- Facts and general truths (Water boils at 100 degrees)
- Actions that happen for a long time (He works in a bank)
Present Continuous
Usage:
- Actions happening at the moment of speaking (now, at the moment)
- Temporary actions (I am staying with a friend for a week) (today, nowadays, tonight, these days)
- Planned situations (I am going to the cinema on friday)
- Annoying habits (He is always losing his keys)
To help me practice these tenses, I used online and AI generated exercises.
My thoughts
I found myself struggle with choosing between present simple and present continuous in some sentences. For example, why "Jack leaves in a few minutes" is wrong? I've asked an AI to explain it to me and i understand now that "leaves" indicates a planned future action, but it isn't that clear to me, especially in that context.

Reminder of present tenses - part 2
This week, I focused on reviewing the present perfect and present perfect continuous tenses. As a week ago, i used similar online resources to remind myself the structure and usage of these tenses:
After reading each resource, I made a short notes for each tense to help me remember the usage.
Present Perfect
Usage:
- Past action with influens on present ("What" is important not "When")
- Describe states that started in the past and continue to the present (I have lived here for 5 years)
- Action that just ended (I have just cooked dinner)
- For the first/second time in ... (It's the first time I've ridden a horse)
Present Continuous
Usage:
- Action, that started in the past and continues now. (Effect is not important, Important is how long)
- Action that has recently stopped or just stopped, but has present results (I have been working all day, that's why I am tired)
To help me practice these tenses, I used online and AI generated exercises.
My thoughts
That two tenses are much more clear to me compared to last week's tenses. I still have some doubts, especially with present perfect continuous, but I think with more practice I will get better at using them.
Class work - Mock Presentation
2025-11-16
We had to create a mock presentation about a topic of our choice. We decided to find a common topic with the group, which turned out to be not so easy. The topic we came up with, which combines telecommunications and chemistry, is “Optical fibers.” We used materials found on the internet and our own knowledge. Below is a bibliography.

Feedback
After the presentation we received feedback from our colleagues and teacher. One of the main points was that keypoints were not clearly highlighted. We realized that we need to work on that aspect to make our presentations more effective. In future presentations, I will focus on making key information more visually distinct and easier to follow.

Past tenses review - part 1
During these two weeks, I focused on reviewing past tenses: past simple and past continuous. I used learning materials generated by AI, including short grammar explanations, examples, and practice exercises tailored to my level.
The AI-generated materials helped me clearly compare finished past actions with actions in progress in the past.
Online resources:
Past Simple
Usage:
- Finished actions in the past (yesterday, last week, in 2020)
- A sequence of past events
- Past facts
Past Continuous
Usage:
- Actions in progress at a specific time in the past
- Background actions interrupted by past simple
- Two actions happening at the same time
To practise, I completed AI-generated exercises with mixed sentences. My score was 68%.
My thoughts
AI explanations were clear and helped me understand when to use each tense. I still make mistakes, but I feel more confident than before.
Class work - Final Presentation
2025-12-18
For the final presentation I've choosed topic about Weather Satellites. Mainly because I had already done it for another subject and I could use some of the materials. I used materials found on the internet and my own knowledge. Below is a bibliography. Images for the presentation were taken mostly from GOES-R website (first link).

Feedback
After the presentation I received feedback from my colleagues and teacher. One of the main points was that the topic was too broad. I realized that I need to focus on a narrower aspect of the topic to make it more clear and engaging for the audience. I've clearly highlighted keypoints in this presentation.

Past tenses review - part 2
In weeks 9 and 10, I focused on past perfect and its difference from past simple. I used AI-generated learning materials such as explanations, timelines, and example sentences.
Online resources:
Past Perfect
Usage:
- Actions completed before another past action
- Giving background information in the past
- Often used with already, just, before
I practised using AI-generated gap-filling and sentence transformation exercises. My result was 72%.
My thoughts
AI-generated timelines helped me understand the order of past events. Past perfect is still challenging, but much clearer than before.

PART II - Reflective Section
Reflective Section
A. Learning Process
At the beginning of the course, my main expectation was to gain greater confidence and fluency in using English, especially in speaking situations. I wanted to feel more comfortable using English more naturally during classes.
My SMART goal focused on improving my grammar, especially the correct use of tenses. I partially achieved this goal. My test results improved during the course, which shows that my grammatical knowledge increased. However, I am still not fluent in using grammar structures spontaneously while speaking. I think that being able to use correct tense or structure on the spot is extremely difficult, especially when there are few opportunities to speak English.
The activities that helped me the most were group work and chatting activities. I dont speak English daily, so practicing it during classes was important. These activities gave me a chance to use English in a more natural way and improve my fluency.
B. AI and Academic Work
During the course, I used AI tools to support my learning process. I used them to revise grammar topics, correct my language mistakes and to plan and structure my presentations. AI helped me organize my ideas and better understand language rules.
I made sure that my use of AI was responsible by treating it only as a support tool. I complied with the AI policy we created in class.
I am not that creative, so AI helped me create ideas. I am aware that my presentations structure would be worse without AI assistance.
C. Presentation Skills
Preparing and delivering mock presentation showed me how important it is to hightlight presentation's keypoints. It taught me how to structure presentations effectively. I learned how to guide the audience's attention and organize content logically.
Feedback from my colleagues and teacher was very helpful. After the mock presentation, I was informed that my key points were not clearly highlighted. I applied this feedback and improved the clarity of key points in my final presentation, but it turned out that the topic was too broad. Next time I need to focus on a narrower aspect of the topic to make it more clear.
D. Self-Reflection and Future Goals
Through this course, I learned that I tend to forget newly learned language structures when I do not use English regularly outside the classroom. Throughout my entire education, I've learned, for example tenses, many, many times. However, everytime I forget them because I dont use them often. In the perfect world, I would practice Engligh regularly, but I think that my Engligh level is enough for my daily life and studies.
